Summer Internship Program in Sustainable Development:
Joint Program with Yale and the Tec de Monterrey

Tec

 

For the sixth year, the Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec) is offering either 4 or 8-week Summer Internship Program on Sustainable Development in Mexico during Summer 2017.  Yale students will work alongside Tec students on specific Sustainable Development projects in rural communities in central Mexico.  Internship opportunities and the length of internships vary by site, see below for details.

Students will be placed at their choice of the following community development project sites during the summer of 2017:
 

  • Rural communities near Hidalgo (Projects can focus on: Public Health, Education, Environmental Sustainability etc.)
  • Queretero (Projects focus on: Environmental Sustainability)

Participants will learn firsthand the culture of the region, understand the values and principles governing the working and living, enjoy some of the life, flavors, and music of Mexico, and be able to identify the basis for sustainable community development in a complex and culturally rich society.

Program Dates and Logistics
Hidalgo program dates: May 29 to July 21.
Queretero program dates: Session 1*, May 28- June 24; Session 2*, June 25- July 22. *Students can select session 1 or 2, or opt to participate in both sessions.

Upon arrival in Mexico, students will travel to their project sites where they will receive a cultural orientation. Each student will be paired with a Mexican student from the Tec, have a faculty supervisor from the Tec's local campuses, and live in student dormitories on campus or with local families.  A concluding session allow students to present about their projects.


Eligibility

  • College students, from all major areas are eligible
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Spanish required. 


Costs- Queretero

  • The cost of the program for 4 weeks is $2,100; The cost of the program for 8 week is $3,850
  • This fee includes:
    • Activities within the program
    • Double room accomodation in cabins
    • All breakfasts + one daily meal during the program
    • All transportation required for the program
  • Not included in this fee:
    • Airfare
    • Personal expenses (participants should also factor in any personal travel expenses, as well as funds for entertainment, snacks, etc.)
    • Some meals
    • International health insurance

Costs- Hidalgo

  • The cost of the program is $2,050
  • This fee includes:
    • Registration fee
    • Airport transfer on arrival and departure day
    • Cultural visits (transport and tour only)
    • Closing ceremony costs
    • Orientation session costs
    • ID card
    • Welcome kit
    • Housing
    • Access to all university facilities (gym, computer labs, library, sports)
    • Most meals (Monday-Friday, breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria, dinner supplies to cook at home)
    • Transportation within Mexico  (related to the projects) 
  • Not included in this fee:
    • Airfare to Mexico is not included
    • Some Meals (weekends and restaurant meals)
    • Prospective participants should also take into account the cost of any personal travel that they might wish to undertake over the weekends during their stay in Mexico, as well as miscellaneous expenses for entertainment, snacks, etc.  
    • International health insurance

Application process and materials


Applications are due by Saturday, April 15, 2017.

Required application materials* include the following:

  • 1-page personal statement describing student’s personal goals for the experience, what skills or contributions you they bring to the experience, and the basis of their interest in Mexico and/or issues of sustainable development
  • Current C.V. or resume
  • Copy of your unofficial transcript
  • *Additional application materials or conversations might be necessary, depending on the program location
