Program Description:

YSS in Siena, Italy
ITAL S130-S140: Intermediate Italian (Group I, L3-L4)

ITAL 130-140

Program Dates: Monday, June 2 – Saturday, July 26, 2014
Students should arrive in Siena on Saturday, June 21.

Prerequisite: ITAL 120 (Elementary Italian) or equivalent

Expenses: Participants are responsible for all costs of the program. A breakdown of the program budget can be found by clicking on the "Program Budget" link here or at the top of the page.

Funding: Yale students on financial aid are eligible for the International Summer Award (ISA).
(Please be aware the ISA has a cap of $10,000.) Students from other universities should consult their financial aid offices.

Course Description:  3 weeks in New Haven (Monday, June 2 to Thursday, June 19), five weeks in Siena (Saturday, June 21 to Saturday, July 26). An intensive "at-home-and-abroad" course designed for second-year Italian students, combining language study at the intermediate level with an exploration of Italian literature, film, and culture. The second half of the course allows students to put their language skills into practice, and provides for trips and cultural encounters in the Tuscany region. 3 Credits

Housing Abroad: Students will be living with host families in Siena. Please keep in mind that the living conditions will vary considerably from host family to host family. Two meals per day are provided with housing. Students must leave housing on the last day of the program.

Trips & Activities*:  Florence, Rome and a day at the Golfo di Baratti beach. *Subject to change

Application Process: Apply through the Center for International Experience website.
Application fee: $55 Application opens: December 15, 2013 Application deadline: February 15, 2014

Airfare: Students are responsible for booking their own airfare to and from the program location. Students should arrive in Siena on Saturday, June 21; class will not meet on Friday, June 20 to allow for travel. Travel arrangements home should be made for Saturday, July 26.

Passport/Visa: Students are responsible for obtaining a passport and researching if a visa is needed. (US citizens do not require a visa for this program.) If a student requires a visa and needs supporting documents from the Study Abroad office, they must give the office at least a week's notice in preparing those documents for them. If needed, a visa must be obtained before classes begin in New Haven.

Pre-departure Orientation: A mandatory pre-departure orientation will be held for this program.
